A Note from the Director

Dear Marigold Patrons and Friends,

I want to celebrate, with you, how vital audience feedback is in providing high quality, exceptional performances at the Marigold. As a community organization, we’re here to push forward what’s possible for live performance in Truro. We’re also here to make sure that we’re feeding your cultural appetite and tastes for live performance!

As we celebrate collaboration and community, I want to make sure I emphasize the significance of your voices in shaping the magic that unfolds on our stage. Your experiences and insights are not only valued but crucial in enhancing the quality of our performances. We firmly believe that a theatre is not merely a space for performers; it is a shared haven where the collective energy of performers and audience intertwine to create something magical. Our job is to connect artists with audiences and to support you in connecting with artists.

As we prepare our 2024 to 2025 programming season, we are placing a spotlight on the importance of hearing from you—our discerning audience. Your feedback is a guiding beacon, helping us refine our craft and curate performances that resonate with the unique spirit of our community. Whether you've been attending our shows for years or are just discovering the magic within our walls, your perspective is a vital part of the creative process.

We invite you to share your thoughts, ideas, and critiques with us, fostering an open dialogue that enriches our artistic journey. From post-show discussions to online surveys, your input will shape the narratives, themes, and styles we bring to life. Together, let's weave a tapestry of stories that reflect the diverse and vibrant tapestry of rural Nova Scotia. Soon, you’ll be seeing the opportunity to fill out post-show surveys to better understand your cultural needs. But, you’re also always welcome to email or call me directly to talk about your experiences, your expectations, and what’s brought you joy at the Marigold! I love hearing every form of feedback!

A quick note I want to make is about why you may sometimes see me introduce performances and other times not. It’s an interesting part of how our industry works. Some performances, we search out those artists or find them touring Atlantic Canada. In those situations, we reach out and offer contracts and fees that we pay to bring those performers here. Other times, performers will come to us to rent our space to bring their performance here themselves and take on the financial risk of the performances success. In that case, I don’t introduce shows and instead let the artist present their performance however they wish. Alternatively, when we purchase a performance, you’ll see me introducing that show because as buyers of that performance, we become the presenters. It may seem a bit confusing, but the two options give performance spaces like ours the versatility to provide multiple avenues to bring high quality performances to our stage.

So, as we embark on this collaborative adventure, I extend my deepest gratitude for your continued support. Your presence in our audience is not just as a witness to the unfolding evolution of cultural experiences in Truro; it is an active participation in the creation of memories that last a lifetime.

Join us in celebrating the power of your voice, as we listen, learn, and grow together in the shared enchantment of live performance at the Marigold.

All my best,

Marshall Feit

Dance the night away at the Winter Warm-Up Dance on February 3, featuring the Motown funk beats of The Mellotones, all while supporting the Marigold Cultural Centre in this lively fundraiser.

The Mellotones have been bringing their high-octane party to stages around the world. Lighting up dance floors wherever they go, the R&B Funk band is an 8-piece powerhouse. From corporate events to festivals, or from sweaty late-night clubs to weddings, their in-demand, energetic show provides the perfect atmosphere for any occasion.

Combining powerful vocals, dynamic horns, and a groovy rhythm section with a catalogue that dives deep into the history of soul, funk, disco, and R&B music, The Mellotones recall an era dominated by the classics of Motown, Stax, and Chess Records.

The members - Jeff Mosher (vocals/saxophone), Jody Lyne (trumpet), Eric Landry (trombone), Sean Weber (lead saxophone), Brad Conrad (guitar), Ian Mosher (keyboards), Mike Farrington Jr. (bass), and Damien Moynihan (drums) - are a remarkably tight unit. Equipped with a wealth of experience as road-tested session players and backup musicians for ECMA and JUNO Award-winning artists, The Mellotones are a hard-working, well-oiled collection of some of the region's best performers.

Over their long career, the band has not only garnered a devoted fan base, but also the opportunity to sit-in with acts such as David Foster, Dan Akroyd, The Free Nationals, Nathan East, and even Dennis Rodman. In 2015 & 2019, The Mellotones toured with renowned blues guitarist Matt Andersen as his backing band.

Guaranteed to deliver a night of exceptional entertainment for the young and the young at heart, The Mellotones are a sure fire party hit ideal for any event.

The Mellotones celebrated their 25th anniversary as a band in 2022. A rare silver celebration for any band in the music industry.

Norma MacDonald with Kristen Martell
February 8 | 7:30 PM
$30 | Folk/Pop

Take out a map. Find the spine of the Appalachians running down from the Canadian east coast to the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. Trace the musical lineage that runs through it like a nerve, from storyteller folk to classic country. Norma MacDonald’s voice hits that nerve, tinging in the tension between here and there, now and then.

Her four previous albums were critical darlings, receiving considerable airplay in North America and the UK, landing perfectly in that contemporary country-folk sweet spot. Her latest album, Old Future, leans into nostalgia a bit more, picking up 1960’s Dolly and Loretta vibes while also nodding to 1970’s California folk-rock, with layered acoustic guitars and lush harmonies. As a song-writer, MacDonald manages to avoid cliché while still making every song feel familiar.

Born in Cape Breton, MacDonald is a staple of the Halifax music scene. Her fourth album, Burn the Tapes (2015) was included in the Polaris Prize 2016 “Longer List”. It debuted at #3 on the national Earshot Folk/Roots chart the week of its release and stayed there for months. It was nominated as Americana/Bluegrass album of the year by Music Nova Scotia. MacDonald’s third album Morning you Wake received glowing reviews in Canada, the U.S and Europe.  It received three Music Nova Scotia nominations in 2011 (Female Solo, Folk and Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year).

Kristen Martell is an acoustic folk/pop artist from the shores of Nova Scotia. Her hazy, sun-dappled songs explore the self and the way we walk through life.  Since returning to music, she has consistently touched the hearts of her devoted fanbase with carefully crafted songs that embrace life’s challenges and subtle moments of beauty. With her debut album ‘Coming Home’ recently nominated for an ECMA, two Music Nova Scotia awards, and new music on the way for 2022, she is an emerging artist not to be missed.
